Pulling Up Roots: Envisioning a Life Free of Migraine - Migraine.com

Holly Baddour- Recently, in my fleeting well moments, I’ve been working on clearing the forest outside our house. My initial goal was to make some trails for our new dog to enjoy for daily walks but as I got into the task, I became obsessed. I decided I wanted to clear our land of the ivy that has overtaken it. As I dug into the ground to free tree after tree of this invasive plant I discovered endless similarities and symbolism connecting ivy and migraine. The process has been therapeutic. Why ivy? When contained, ivy can be a lovely plant. It’s a... Read more

Steven Workman- As a caregiver to someone with chronic pain, I often find myself in a position of having to locate my wife’s medications. Sometimes I have to help administer her injections and find things to help her be as comfortable as possible. Keeping the different medications straight She has quite a few different medications in her arsenal to choose from such as abortive medications, preventive medications, anti-inflammatory medications, etc. She has both oral and injectable medications. The catch is that you cannot use all of them at once. She takes daily preventives and saves the abortive meds for when things get... Read more

Amanda Workman- I spent my childhood growing up on a farm/ranch. If there was one thing you learned by a young age, it was not to get too attached to any animal aside from a dog or cat because there was no promise how long they would be on the farm. Some animals were sold for profit to keep the ranch running, while on the other hand some were named ‘deep freeze’ in order to provide protein to sustain my family. I know some people may find that crude but unless you do not eat meat, it is no different than buying... Read more

#purpleproject- I recently shared a video of me in the middle of a Hemiplegic Migraine episode. After the fog lifted, I decided to share a video in a better state of mind to give you some examples of how Hemiplegic Migraines affect me.   Various symptoms of hemiplegic migraine Hemiplegic Migraines can present in many different ways, which means no two patients might have the same exact symptoms with each episode. I often experience these two symptoms as indicators or preludes to my hemiplegic migraine: tingling in my hand that moves up my arm and feels like pain that moves up through... Read more

The Migraine Girl- Despite chronic migraine and lots of personal ups and downs over the last year or so, I consider myself to be extremely fortunate. I’m close with my family; my sister and my parents all live in my neighborhood, which is actually really wonderful. My neighborhood is fervently supportive of my community-centric business, and I have thoughtful, funny, and kind coworkers on my team. I even have a second, very part-time gig as a health writer, and the colleagues I have at that job are conscientious and so lovely. And don’t even get me started on my friends: I have hit... Kyky Knight- It has always been a part of my culture and an especially prominent practice in my family to wear braids. I grew up wearing them, learned to do them myself as early as my pre-teen years, and have always had an affinity for certain hairstyles requiring that I braid my hair. I remember watching television as a young girl and seeing actresses who had similar hairstyles as me and it was formative and brilliant: I felt represented and loved that I shared something with characters I looked up to. As a lifelong migraine sufferer, however, I am not able to... Read more

Migraines are confusing, misunderstood, unpredictable. They are triggered and experienced differently by each person. For me, there were days that required every ounce of energy I had to stay focused on a task. Days when each step felt like a thousand hammers against my skull. Days when I could not even lay down because just the touch of a pillow made the pressure in my head unbearable. But if you have migraines I don’t need to tell you about the pain, rather I want to remind you of hope. For as long as I can remember I have had headaches.... Read more
