Has anyone had problems with angina after using triptans?

Today, for the first time, 10 minutes after taking my 100 mg sumatriptan with two Aleve, I experienced an angina attack that lasted for about an hour off and on. I knew that it wasn’t a heart attack because the pain was not excruciating, it was bad but bearable. I’ve been using sumatriptan for over five years with no problems. I do have controlled high blood pressure as well as cardiac disease, but my last stress test was good according to my cardiologist. I’ve been using Botox for the last year and a half every three months for migraines and for the most part it seems to have worked, but the last six months or so it seems to be working not as well. I’ve had problems the last six months or so my doctor has given me a six day corticosteroid pack, which takes a multiple day migraine away. Anyone else experience angina or similar problems with triptans? It’s been the only thing that works as a breakthrough medication for me, but now I’m afraid to take it again. Any solutions that others have found? I tried Aimovig With horrible side effects. Years ago I used Topamax until I had multiple bouts with large (4-6mm) kidney stones. Supposedly those with a kidney stone history:tendancy should not use Topamax.

  1. Hi
Thank you for joining the conversation and sharing your experience with us. That sounds scary! If you haven't had a chance to check in with your doctor I would encourage you to. There is evidence that know cardiac issues and triptans don't mix, so in that light I would encourage you to seek counsel from your doctors.
I'm sure others will be along soon to share their experiences with you and in the mean time I'm sending you pain free wishes, Nancy Harris Bonk, Patient Leader/Moderator Migraine.com Team Member
