Anyone given Decadron in the ER?

Last night I had to make the dreaded trip to the ER for a migraine going on three days. I haven't been to the ER for a migraine in years, mostly because of the way they treat you. But, I didn't have a choice, I was so sick. So they gave me IV benadryl, reglan, and fluid. I asked, OK so what about pain medicine? In the past, it had always included a narcotic. She explained to me that they don't give narcotics for migraines anymore, just as a last resort. OK, so tried it without and absolutely no change in pain level. I asked for something else and they gave me Decadron. I've never heard of it. I said OK and after an hour still had no improvement. I was tempted to ask for the narcotic, but don't want to look like a drug seeker, so I was discharged home. For me, it was a complete waste of time, but has this worked for anyone else? Is this a common drug they are using for migraine now? I would appreciate any feedback!

  1. Hi J Bel,

Thank you for your post. So sorry to hear about your ER experience. Must be frustrating to admit yourself and in the end not receive the treatment you need. I do hope you were able to find other treatments (and self care techniques) which helped minimize the pain. In regards to your question about Decadron, the following articles provide some information, listing it as a commonly used medication at hospitals and ERs - https://migraine.com/blog/shocking-medication-shortages-a-migraineurs-list/, https://migraine.com/blog/alternatives-to-the-er/. I hope you find them helpful! If you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to reach out. We love hearing from you! Wishing you all the best today.

    1. Hi J Bel,

With all the attention on the opioid crisis, ER's rarely give migraine patients opioids now. I'm not sure how I feel about this to be honest. I understand there is a problem, but what are we supposed to do during a long lasting attack that doesn't respond to other medications?

At any rate, I hope you are feeling better now and your migraine attack is over. Decadron, or other steroids can be used to break a nasty migraine cycle. In fact, my doctor has had me use this - sometimes it works, other times not so much.

Let us know how you are feeling,
      Nancy

      1. The last time I was in the ER for a migraine I was given the benadryl cocktail as an IV injection. It worked wonderfully for me.

        1. Hi!

I had an infusion for a nasty migraine cycle about a week ago which contained Benadryl, decadron, reglan, and sodium magnesium. I was also prescribed divalporate sodium for five days afterwards. And yes, it helped!
