Medication stop working?

Hi. Has anyone had a situation where their medication just suddenly stopped working or helping? I've been to a few headache doctors and am in the middle of finding a new one. I've tried several pain meds, with no relief. So until I find a new dr and meds, the only thing I have is Excedrin with Ibuprofen. It has always taken the edge off my headaches (unless I am having a mind blowing one), but this last headache I have now, it hasn't even done that ! I'm a little worried, considering that was my only defense against some relief. Has anyone else had that happen to them? And if so, did the meds start helping again the next time they needed them. Thanks !

I'm so sorry you're having this experience. It's unfortunate, but a frequent problem for all types of medications used in Migraine: preventives, abortives and rescues. Sometimes they'll work again later, sometimes not. Every patient is different I'm afraid.

Are you seeing a Migraine specialist yet? That might be the very best thing you can do for yourself and this issue. Here is a link that will help you find the specialist nearest you: https://migraine.com/blog/looking-for-a-migraine-specialist/

Please write back and let us know how you're doing...

    1. I'm sorry you are going through this. I've been having migraines since 1990, and have had many near-misses; something helped for a time, then suddenly didn't. One thing I regret is increasing the dosage too many times to try to recapture the relief. I was on Gabapentin at one point. It helped, then it just didn't. The doctor kept increasing the dosage until I couldn't figure out how to write a check, and couldn't remember the directions to my kids' school. Scary!! My approach has been to try almost anything the migraine specialist suggests. I did elect not to try the implant device, but just about anything else was worth a try. I'm still searching...

    2. That's wild, I'm sorry your brain fog got so bad on the gabapentin! Did your cognitive function improve once you stopped taking it? I sure hope so. -Melissa, team member

  2. I switch to other rational therapy

    1. Over my 47 years of migraines, I've had a variety of medications that worked for quite a while and then quit. When that happens I go back to my doctor or my neurologist, because usually there's something else I can try.

      1. I try something else. Right now my nurtec isn’t working for me, so I’m forced to take imitrex. Problem is that you can only take it 3 times a week at the very most. Therefore,, rebound headaches have become a real problem for me. I don’t know what do

        1. Oh dear, , I wish that you weren't dealing with this right now! Have you been able to reach out to your doctor about the rebound headaches and the problems they're causing for you? -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)
