MTHFR Gene Mutation

I was diagnosed with the MTHFR Gene Mutation through my psychiatrist (I have BiPolar Disorder, with severe depression) mood being on of the things the mutation affects, my doc told my it also could be causing or making my migraines worse. You get 15 minutes with your pyschiatrist, so I was diagnosed, given a script for EnLyte and told to change my diet. Anybody diagnosed with this as a cause for migraines? Have you changed your diet? Heard of EnLyte? Can you give me any info on MTHFR Gene Mutation?

  1. Hi danadibs1979,

    I have the MTHFR c677t gene mutation and tried deplin as a treatment but didn't see any results. We have these articles on MTHFR I can share with you;

    I've also found Dr. Ben Lynch's site very helpful;

    I also found this article that may help as well;

    Let me know how you make out,

    1. I have been taking EnLyte (which I discovered is Deplin, just made by a different company) for about 2weeks, I actually feel worse. My migraines are worse and I have noticed no difference with my depression symptoms, granted I know I have to give it more than 2 weeks. I was told it could be "life altering" and I haven't seen any glimmer. I have more to say about the reason it would be so awesome if this supplement worked for me, but I'm rocking an 8/10 here so I'll check back later

      1. Nancy Bonk-Harris,
        Did you continue to exclude Folic Acid from your diet after you stopped taking the Deplin?

        1. Seven members of my family -- across three generations -- are now remarkably free from migraine pain due to our discovery of MTHFR. We all take a Methylated Vitamin B Complex containing Folate. Folate (Vitamin B9) is critical, but the other B Vitamins are needed co-factors. We also avoid folic acid as much as possible, but this is much harder for the kids to deal with! A Ketogenic diet is also helping. Personally, I'm 90% better, and I suffered with massive migraines for 20 years. I still can't believe I'm nearly pain free. And when I do get a migraine, Excedrin Migraine will resolve the pain in a few hours! That NEVER happened before! Deplin and other diabetic Rx prescriptions contain too much Folate for MTHFR sufferers to handle. They also don't contain the other essential B vitamins.
