Nurtec insurance approval issues

Hello,
My doc prescribed me Nurtec as a preventive which is 1 pill every other day. BCBS says FDA approved Nurtec as a preventive for 15 pills every 30 days. However, it’s packaged in packs of 8 pills so I can really only get one pack of 8 pills every 30 days which is not enough.
Has anyone had this issue? I’ve been back and forth with BCBS and my doc with no luck.
Thanks for any feedback.

  1. Thank you for reaching out to the community with this question. I wonder if the doctor is prescribing it for acute treatment rather than prevention? That may be something to check out. Hopefully other members will be along shortly to share their story with you. Keep us posted! Nancy Harris Bonk, Patient Leader/Moderator MIgraine.com Team

I was prescribed Nurtec. Unfortunately, I did not do well on that medication, but I know it works for others.
I had the same issue with the amount of pills and the ridiculous cost. I went to nurtec.com and got a coupon card
for the pills to be free. It was crazy! Because my insurance only covered 8 pills, my doctor was able to give me
samples of nurtec that were in the office for the rest of the month. You could try that option at least for a while. I am
sorry, I only needed it for a month as I stopped taking it. That particular doctor was a gynecologist that prescribed
that medication often enough to give me samples. You may need to find a doctor willing to do that monthly.
      Good Luck!
