Emgality injections

I've been doing the injections for almost 3 years now. I've almost continually had severe body pain since starting them. Has anyone else had that side effect?

  1. Hi there- thanks so much for asking about what sounds like a very troubling side effect. We actually do have a couple of forums for our community members to share experiences with Emgality and the side effects related to it. Hopefully you'll be able to find some information there by skimming through the posts: https://migraine.com/forums/side-effects-emgality. https://migraine.com/forums/emgality-share-experience. Have you discussed this issue with your doctor? Thinking of you- Holly (migraine.com team).

    1. Hi, Jen. Sorry you are going through this! I have seen people mention joint pain as something they've experienced -- Holly gave you some good links to check out. You're certainly not alone. Have you talked about this with your doctor? I'm curious to know what their response is. Has Emgality been helpful for you otherwise?

One more thing -- we encourage everyone experiencing side effects on the new CGRP drugs like Emgality to report their experience to the FDA. They rely on that feedback to determine how the drug is labeled and used in the future. It's a quick form to fill out, if you want to take a look. Here's the link:

Please keep us posted about what you decide to do next -- while Emgality has been helpful for many, it's not for everyone. We're here for you! -Melissa, migraine.com team

      1. I am sorry to hear about your body pain. Have you discussed it with your doctor? I am not 100% sure if that is a common side effect or not? I actually use a different CGRP, aimovig. I know the different CGRPs are not all created equally but it may be beneficial to try a different one for a few months. This could give you and your doctor time to see if another one will work and perhaps the body pain goes away. Depending on the type of body pain you are having, there could be other causes as well. It is most definitely something you should bring up with your doctor. Best wishes - Amanda (team member)

        1. Jumping in late but I’m desperate to find info. I’ve suffered migraine since I was 13…I’m 57. I’ve been on countless meds and thought Emgality was my lifesaver… at first. I was taken off Topamax and put on Emgality injections about 5 years ago. At first it was like a miracle. My 20-25 headaches a month went to less than 10 a month! However, over time I’ve developed many health issues including significant weight gain, heart palpitations, random swelling and pain in various joints, heart burn, mood swings.. to name a few. It’s easy for neurologist to dismiss symptoms saying they aren’t related. Last month within 10 min of injection I was so nauseous, lasted for about 5 days, itchy patches on arms, horrible joint pain, and ended up in ER because my heart was skipping a beat. They said no Afib but what they call a flutter. Very scary. I’m due for injection today but I simply can’t do it.

          1. I'm sorry to hear that you've developed such a negative reaction to Emgality 🙁. I encourage you to talk to your doctor and see if there are any alternatives available. Emgality is in a class of drugs called CGRPs. There are several options that are similar to it, such as Nurtec, Aimovig, and Ajovy. Check out this article for more information: https://migraine.com/clinical/cgrp-similar-different.

Wishing you the best of luck with this, - Cody (Team Member)
