I had my 1st migraine in college. Roommates found me bagging the side of my head against the wall. Ended up in Health Services & don’t remember anything! Missed a date who brought me roses. Next bad M was when I was a Sr. in college. Would get them after an exam! Used excedrin.
Was told by University Dr. that I fit typical migraine sufferer: female, dark hair, pale skin, light eyes (green) & an A Type personality! Not another severe one until my jr. year after final exams. Another when I was pregnant with first child & one when pregnant with my third child. Vomited & was hospitalized with dehydration with each, gave me shot of demerol & IV fluids & kept me overnight to rest. Thankfully babies were ok! Had respite till after my 5th child was born. I nursed him ( nursed them all) & migraines seemed to lessen. I took excedrin & then an Rx. Thought I would outgrow them. But nooo! I have made it through 4 of my children’s weddings & my 2 stepdaughter’s
with migraines. (One of my son’s eloped.) I was a single parent for 6 years, remarried, and worked full time for 21 years. I worked with migraines unless I was vomiting. Now they last longer and rarely are as severe. Could not watch cartoons as a child and only some animated movies as an adult. Disco ball era about killed me! Smells are triggers for me:
grease, bacon, ham, lunch meat, microwave popcorn, cigarettes & cigars, heavy metal music, peppers of any kind, cilantro, asparagus, aged cheeses, sodium notrates & nitrites, & most fragrances.
I have migraine warning: auras, balance is off, uncoordinated ie. bump into furniture , miss what I’m reaching for in the refrigerator, loud sounds, insomnia, & strong odor of something burning.
My mother had severe migraines. One of my younger sisters has been unemployable because of migraines.
Thank goodness only one of my five children has infrequent migraines - my youngest son.
Apologize for this being so long. Perhaps will help someone feel they are not alone, a hypochondriac, crazy, use migraines as an excuse to get out of something, or just can’t handle stress meaning awful pain is our fault!
