The Migraine Wave - Migraine.com

Holly Baddour- Surf’s up Riding a wave toward the shore, the power of the ocean is underneath me. I see the horizon in the distance. My heartbeat is steady as everything is working perfectly. I have my bearings. I’m using skills I’ve attained through years of practice. I am capable of navigating these waters and feel confident in doing so. I’m happy and feeling good. From out of nowhere a larger wave crashes over me from behind. I’m pulled under. I get a face full of sand and a shocking mouthful of water. The force of the ocean that I was enjoying just... Amanda Workman- This is one of those articles intended for the ones who love those of us in chronic pain, more than those of us in chronic pain. We know that it can sometimes be extremely difficult to love and be with someone who is in chronic pain for many reasons. Unfortunately we feel the burden of this more than anyone could ever explain to a non-suffer. This is a large part of why we battle depression in so many cases. Here are some things that can assist someone with loving or being with someone who is in chronic pain. Learn our... Read more

Editorial Team- We asked our contributors a series of questions during Migraine Awareness Month. We asked, “Have your migraine attacks evolved or changed over time?”, and here’s what they had to share. Sarah Cyclical migraine attacks “My migraine attacks are cyclical, which I’ve actually started viewing as a good thing because they do not respond to treatment. Some years, they are constant— symptoms exist from the time I wake up until I go to bed, without ceasing. Other years, there are short periods between attacks of maybe eight hours or a day or two. Every once in a while, I get a... Read more

Kyky Knight- Heading out on the town to see a band play a loud concert, in a brightly lit music venue full of smells that are interesting at best, and outright bad at worst, may seem like the ultimate list of things to avoid for many who suffer from migraine disease. For music lovers like me in the migraine community, being attentive to your migraine triggers and symptoms may mean having to sacrifice seeing your favorite bands and concerts often. While there are definitely times when I have to cancel my plans to see one of my favorite artists in lieu of laying... Read more

Elizabeth Roberts-Zibbel- When I read about people with migraine disease who “push through,” who go to work despite pain and fatigue and nausea and vertigo, I breathe a sigh of relief that I no longer have to make those decisions about when to go and when to just give up and stay home. I was having to miss so much work, and getting sick in the middle of shifts, that I had to quit my job. I applied for disability and was approved. I now work from home. Acting in a play with migraine However, even though my clinical trial is over... Read more

Kyky Knight- I used to lay down with my face pressed against really gross, cold, hard linoleum floors, with my eyes closed, attempting to listen to lectures by my professors from just outside classroom doors when I was in college. Often. Looking like a hungover college student Any unsuspecting passerby might without further investigation think that I was just another hungover college student, tired and dehydrated from the previous night out, but perhaps disappointingly to the party-inclined, it was usually just another migraine. I would also usually end up in a professor’s office hours some short time after, discussing that I’d missed... Read more

For as long as I can remember I’ve suffered from migraines that last for weeks or months at a time. The worst was my Junior year of High School, while everyone else in my class was looking at colleges I was home with a 7 month long migraine. Thats right 7 long never ending months straight of a consistent migraine. I was told by most of my teachers that I looked fine and there was nothing wrong with me. I was home schooled for 4 months. Doctors tried every type of medication there was and I did multiple hospital visits,... Read more
