What is a good abortive that won’t aggravate colitis?
I’ve had success with Imitrex, but after a colitis attack (1st one ever), my doc doesn’t want me taking it. She has me trying different meds that so far are not effective.
The only abortive I've found to work for me us Midrin. Difficult to find at times, but I haven't had any gastric issues while taking it. You could also try an injection of Toradol which is an anti-inflammatory, this may cause some gastric upset, but doubtful since its an injection. If nothing else, apply ice.
They prescribed Midrin, but I guess it’s being discontinued so I can’t use it. I tried Gabapentin which did nothing. They gave me Benedryl injections, but I have been to chicken to try them. The needle is so long! They gave me Sprix to try which is a nasal spray. I’ve tried it multiple times and it does nothing. I still have some Imitrex, but when that’s gone I’m worried nothing will work. I’d rather risk the colitis than have the migraines. I can’t carry injections around with me at work. The Sprix has to be refrigerated which makes it hard to carry around. I’m pretty frustrated with the whole thing. Is it too much to ask for a pill that doesn’t aggravate my digestive system?
The thing with Midrin is it was grandfathered in the FDA clinical trials. This essentially means that manufacturers make it, then they don’t, then they make it again. If you have a “compounding” pharmacy near you, you can actually have your doctor order the different ingredients, in the amounts needed, and the compounding pharmacy will make it for you. It doesn’t seem to be too much to ask for, something that doesn’t aggravate your colitis, but Heck, they can’t even give us a medication that works for migraines! So unfortunately for everyone, it’s always trial and error. What works for one, will not necessarily work for the masses.

I’m sure my insurance wouldn’t cover that. I wonder how expensive it is.
