Caffeine use

Caffeine helps migraine?

  1. Hi !
Yes, for some people, caffeine can assist in relieving head pain. On the other hand, for those who are sensitive to caffeine, a stimulant, this doesn't hold true. In fact a small subset of people with migraine can only have a limited amount, about 1 cup or so (or many not any) of caffeine each day. If I drink more than one cup of coffee a day for a number of days, I'll throw myself into a nasty rebound cycle. Here is more information on both caffeine and rebound: https://migraine.com/migraine-treatment/natural-remedies/caffeine

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have more questions. Hoping you have a good day, Nancy Harris Bonk, Patient Advocate/Moderator

    1. Thanks so much for your reply. I have been suffering with migraines my whole life and I think caffeine is one of my triggers. But, I'm thinking of trying it one more time to check. I thank God for this site everyday. It's my lifeline knowing I'm not alone.

  2. @reenee for some people caffeine can help a migraine. It can also be a trigger for others! It really depends on how your body will process it. Many people get addicted to caffeine and that can pose all sorts of other problems like withdrawal headaches if they suddenly stop getting caffeine. For me, it doesn't matter either way. I guess that can be a good thing lol. Warmly, Cheryl migraine team member
