Child oxygen

My daughter has been prescribed by a private headache specialist with cluster headaches. Her GP has prescribed oxygen for at home but won’t prescribe it for school which she needs. She’s been off school now 6 weeks due to a cycle attack and everytime she gets a headache when she goes back to school I shouldn’t be picking her up she should be able to her oxygen in school and stay in school. I don’t know what to do she’s already lost 6 weeks of education as the school are hopeless and not even provided her with any school work

  1. How very frustrating, I'm sorry your daughter is going through all this. My first thought is to ask the headache expert to give your daughter the oxygen for school. Have you tried that route? There are also oxygen canisters, called Boost I wonder if that would be an option for school? https://www.boostoxygen.com/.

Let me tag one of our contributors/moderators who lives with cluster headache and can share her pointers with you. In the meantime, here is our information on cluster headache; https://migraine.com/search?s=cluster%20headache.

I hope this helps, will you keep us posted? Nancy Harris Bonk, Patient Leader/Moderator Migraine.com Team

    1. I'm so sorry your doctor won't prescribe oxygen for school. So does the school need the prescription to read that it needs to be provided for school? Typically the prescription reads "oxygen therapy for cluster headache as needed at 12-15 lpm with a non-rebreather mask." and that would mean anytime day or night - home or school. By the time you pick her up at school to get oxygen it's way outside the window for optimal use. The Boost canisters won't work sadly, but she does need access to her medical oxygen which is prescribed. I would, if I were you, get a 504 plan in place and that has to be included. The doctor should not need to write anything else, this is a PRN treatment. My kids had asthma and they had inhalers, it didn't need to be prescribed for use at school. Now what we did have to do was set up a health plan and I had to explain to them how to give my kid the inhalers and such. So there might be some educating them on Cluster headache and oxygen. If you need help with that, reach out to Clusterbusters they have a website Clusterbusters .org (without the space of course) they are also on Facebook. We might be able to get someone that can help you walk the school through something if that's what they need. We have research articles on the website and all that. This is the most insane thing I have heard. I'm so sorry that your daughter has cluster headache - I have them and it's the worst. But I'm so very sorry the school and the doctor's offices are giving you a run around when it comes to her health. Let me know if I can help further.
