I don't know what to try next. I've had migraines for 43 yrs. Not tried oxygen yet but ?

  1. - Thank you so much for writing in. What a long journey with migraine you've had. I'm assuming you've tried many preventative and rescue treatments along the way to no avail (triptans, CGRPs, botox, etc). Are you working with a migraine specialist? Interesting that you raise oxygen therapy as an idea. It is generally used for cluster headache. Is that what you've been diagnosed with? We have a lot of resources on this approach including a forum dedicated to it here: https://migraine.com/forums/oxygen-therapy-for-migraines. I hope it (and the comments that follow it) may prove useful for you. We are here to provide information and support anytime and are glad you are with us. Warmly - Holly (team member)

    1. Hi
      Living with long term migraine disease is exhausting, and frustrating. You're not alone in this and I want you to know we're here for you.
      Try not to lose hope - there are over 100 medications, supplements, devices, complementary therapies and lifestyle modifications that can be used to manage migraine disease and most of us are on a combination of these, I sure do. My current treatment plan includes Botox every three months, magnesium glycinate and Cefaly (a device) every night for prevention. I use sumatriptan nasal spray to stop an attack. If that doesn't stop it I use medical cannabis. I keep a regular sleeping schedule, and try to stay hydrated, both of which can be a migraine attack trigger for me.
      There isn't a lot of research on oxygen for migraine however we have heard from a number of people who find relief. The thing is oxygen doesn't work to prevent attacks. We have resources here;

      Another thought is it may be time to reach out to an expert doctor who is board certified in headache medicine. General neurologists may be fine doctors however it's difficult for them to be experts in one disease state as they treat so many including stroke, MS, epilepsy, Parkinson's and more. Migraine/headache experts have this extra certification in headache medicine and treat migraine and headache all day, every day. They can have a huge impact in our care. I can tell you first hand these experts have made a positive difference in my quality of life. Let me share some of our articles on this topic:

      I know that's a lot to go over so I'll stop now! Please let me know if you questions, I know how frustrating the process is to find a new doctor.
      I'm sending you pain free wishes and look forward to hearing from you, Nancy Harris Bonk, Patient Leader/Moderator (team member)

      2. Hello - I do hope you get the chance to reach out to a treating physician about a new treatment plan. Sometimes falling back on past treatments that were not effective then may help now. Wishful thinking. But as Nancy offered up, there are so many different treatments for migraines. I hope you find just the right combination of medication to ease your pain. I've found a medication for epilepsy and/or trigeminal neuralgia along with triptans that give me relief. It's taken a long time to get just the right combo, but I think I'm finally getting there. But then again, over the years migraine triggers and symptoms can change as well. I have to be on guard and aware of what is and isn't working. Continually working with my neurologist is crucial. This way I will be on top of these changes, and relief will come. Sending you thoughts of relief and strength to keep you going. Warmly - Rebecca (team member)
