During a Migraine Attack Do You Prefer to be Alone or With Others? Why?

Migraine attacks can feel scary. In the face of severe pain and complex symptoms, everyone responds differently. Some want to be alone while laboring through it. For these people, having anyone else to interact with is too much to handle- it can feel like giving energy one doesn’t have. Others find safety and security in having someone nearby. For them, it is upsetting to be alone while navigating severe pain.

Which are you and why?

  1. Hi I find that I go to my dark room for a while with no one here then when it eases up I need someone to talk to ! recently I have had an Mri will know the results on Tuesday .. my biggest concern is finding out that my Betahistine will not be available anymore for my vertigo I am trying not to think about it but praying for an alternative .. My migraines have changed now its nausea first then migraine then vertigo..Wishing everyone a good day and will keep you updated Susan !

    1. HI dear Susan- Love hearing from you always. Thank you for chiming in on this topic. I like how you are a mix of preferring to be alone and with others depending on where you are in the migraine phase. That makes total sense.

Please do circle back regarding the MRI results on Tuesday. We'll be thinking of you, for sure. I'm confused- is the Betahistine related to the MRI or a separate issue? Is the availability of that drug related to a shortage or that you fear your doctor will no longer want to prescribe it for some reason? I just did a quick search and see there does appear to be a shortage but there are some alternatives available (though never fun to change medications!).

And how interesting that your migraine presentation has changed! Me too! Nausea first for me, as well. Then neck, then head pain. Used to be neck pain first. To what do you attribute that shift for you? For me, I think it's that I started taking Qulipta.

Hope to hear back from you Tuesday, if you have time. Thinking of you and sending love. Warmly - Holly (team member)

  2. Holly, I prefer to have someone home because of that awful freezing up thing that's happened a few times, but they have to be quiet!! Of course that rarely the case because hubby is still working someone, but hopefully this will change soon.
I'm sorry to hear your medication is not going to be available. My new doctor refused my Meclazine refill 2 years ago for my vertigo too, but I knew Dramamine had the exact same dosage so I just keep it on hand now. However, once again, my drug insurance dropped another of my medications, this time for promethazine. My new doctor always hassled me about "Why do you need promethazine so much"? Hello?! Chronic migraines?!! (Do they not even bother to look at your history before they call?) So I mentioned this to my neurologist yesterday when I was in for my botox, he said he'd take over my promethazine prescription and he told me about Marc Cuban Pharmacy online. No insurance is used and my promethazine is actually a dollar cheaper! However, I'm sure I'll have to pay shipping, but that's not a problem if I can get my nausea meds with zero hassle! Unfortunately, this place only does generics so Aimovig isn't available.

    1. Whoa- this is fascinating, Annzie. Thank you so much for this information. First, glad you have hubby to be there for you when you need. What's happening with his work timeline?

Second, I've been wondering about the Marc Cuban CostPlus Drug company. So, it's a little like GoodRX in that it bypasses insurance by it's by mail only? And how bizarre about the phenergan being dropped given how frequently you use it! We have this in common. Will you please let us know how things go with CostPlus? I'm most interested in hearing.

Any update on still qualifying for the Aimovig Savings program? Thanks so much for chiming in with this helpful information. All love to you - Holly (team member)

    2. Looks like a lot of things are available in liquid form too. That's a godsend for people that have trouble with pills! Thanks for sharing this. Always looking for vetted ways to help people save money on meds. <3 -Melissa, team member

  3. For me, it’s depends on how long the migraine lasts. If the very severe pain of migraine lasts for several days at its height, then I prefer to have somebody there. But it has to be somebody who really understands, who will sit quietly and just be a supportive presence. Luckily, I do have one or two people who can do that. I do have migraine pain every day, but I’m talking about when it’s at its worst. In the short term it’s easier to be alone. But it gets a little daunting after three or four days. The overall loneliness of this illness can be very hard to take sometimes, even on the “easier” days.

  4. I was told by the pharmacist that there is no pill for vertigo maybe in the states they have it sure going to mention it to my doctor on Tuesday . I am apprehensive about the MRI , been thinking that maybe a pinched nerve may be causing my migraines as you all know mine were from a waterskying accident when I was in my 20s went to doctor for three weeks for cortizone they went away.. I can't figure out why they would come back in my 70s for one and 1/2 years ? Guess I will get an answer either way on Tuesday.. And hopefully find something for my vertigo ..Thanks to all I'm thankful for everyone here ! Susan

    2. hi. I see you were told that there is no pill you could get for vertigo there? Are you able to get Dramamine over-the-counter? Dramamine has the same active ingredients as Meclizine. I used to by the Dramamine version when I would fly. After being hospitalized once, they gave me the prescription form, Meclizine. I never knew they both had the same active ingredients until I was given it in the hospital. I hope tonight is going well for you and you get answers about the MRI soon. (Tonya, team member).
