I Have 3 Prescriptions for Different Health Issues that Now Can Be Used to Treat Migraines

I have chronic migraines and I've taken Nortriptyline 50 mg. as a preventative for many years now. I recently found out that my two other medications, Atenolol for blood pressure and Duloxetine for anxiety/nerve pain, can also be used now to treat migraines. I was wondering if anyone else has been in a similar situation and what did you do. I haven't been able to see my new primary doctor yet, but I will ask them at that time what they think I should do.

  1. Hi there - Thanks for posting your question. Various different medications can be used off-label to treat migraine per your physicians discretion. Here's a link to some info on antidepressants for migraine: https://migraine.com/migraine-treatment/antidepressants-for-migraine-headaches. You are also correct in identifying that Atenolol can be used to treat migraine. Here's an article about that class of medication: https://migraine.com/migraine-treatment/beta-blockers-for-migraine-headaches.

Hope that this information helps! - Cody (Team Member)

    1. Thank you Cody, I appreciate all the information.

      1. Thank you for being here with us and keep asking questions! When do you get to see your new doctor? Warmly, Tracy (Team Member)

    2. I probably won't be able to see a new doctor until December, I will be moving soon. Thank you for asking Tracy.

      1. best of luck with your move and I hope that the appointment with the doctor comes soon and brings the answers you're wanting and needing. It certainly would be wonderful if there were bonus health "benefits" to a medication!

    3. Thank you Arlene! 😊

      1. like you, I started a medication for one thing, and a different doctor told me that medication should also help with migraine. I wanted to share this article about the medications I wrote about. https://migraine.com/living-migraine/medications-for-other-conditions-that-help. I think it is great that a medication for one thing, can potentially help another. I do hope that the ones you are taking, are helping. If not, maybe they will find something else that can help multiple conditions. Hang in there and know you are not alone. Many do have multiple conditions in which the medications have many uses. Again, thank you for being part of the community. (Tonya, team member).
