Light Issues, Glares, and Halos

I am unfortunately a new migraine sufferer and am still learning about them. I have about 1 - 2 a month but have noticed that I see a change in my vision before the headache comes on. The best way to explain it is that the lights look like they have a glare, such as if you have been crying and your eyes are wet and looking at lights caused glares. And then I have a headache for 2-3 days and then the light issues are still there for sometimes up to 48 hours. Is this common?

  1. Hi ,

Visual aura is common in migraine, though it can be experienced differently by different people. You can find a few articles on this list that talk about what people are experiencing.

      1. Seconding Donna’s answer. Some who experience migraine lack visual aura. Many, including myself experience it.

Mine may be seeing glittery white “stars”. Experiencing white tunnel vision. Blurred vision. Double vision. Ordinary lights appearing to jump, wiggle, etc. Vision loss in only one eye. And seeing lights overlaying my vision (kinda like sunspots).

I also experience visual aura with my eyes closed and these symptoms sometimes persist after the head pain begins.

Do talk to with your doctors regarding your specific symptoms to best diagnose and treat your migraines.

I find Migraine Buddy a good tool for tracking symptoms. And I always find as you have here, that there are others with the same symptoms. Usually tens of thousands even hundreds of thousands of others.

Best wishes to you. You are not alone. We are here with you.
