Migraine doctors

I live in the mid west. Omaha NE area. I've had migraines for 40 over years, been on verapamil and sertialine for over 20 years. I'm concerned I'm having side effects for being on meds for so long. I'm looking for a migraine specialist and having a hard time finding . I 62 and very tired of all the headaches over the years. I average at least 3 migraines sometimes more a week. Can any one refer me to Dr? Or experience with being on these meds for this long of time? Thanks Casper

  1. Casper, it's nice to meet you! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I have searched for you and found a headache specialist in the Omaha area that you can check out. He may be a good fit for you, but only you can determine that. Here is a link to his practice:

No matter which doctor you choose, I strongly recommend you track and document what you experience during your attacks from start to finish. This would include all symptoms, medications, relief methods, pain levels, and the impact the attacks have on your daily life. This will provide your doctor with a better picture of your experience. I suggest writing down any questions or topics you would like to cover during your visit so you can stay focused and make it the most productive. I hope you find this helpful. We are always here if you need further support. Warmly, Cheryl Migraine Community Team

    1. Hi there- Thanks so much for reaching out, Casper. Sounds like you are living with chronic migraine. I have also been living with migraine for 50 years (25 of them chronically). I understand the concerns about the cumulative use of migraine medication. Being under the care of a migraine specialist is something that we recommend so I'm glad you are seeking this. I welcome an annual reassessment of my treatment strategy. That said, I generally land in the same place with the medications I am taking. The concerns about their long-term use are outweighed by the quality of life they give me (even though I still live with migraine pain or related symptoms the majority of the time. Without the medications, I would land in the hospital frequently or be bedbound. It's a personal decision for sure, and having a qualified migraine specialist to help with this type of assessment/evaluation is very useful.

In addition to the resources that Cheryl shared above, I wanted to offer a couple of others to help you find some migraine doctors in your area: https://americanmigrainefoundation.org/find-a-doctor/. And: https://headaches.org/resources/healthcare-provider-finder/.

I hope this information is helpful. Please reach out with any questions. We are here to provide information, support, and compassion anytime. So glad you're with us. Warmly - Holly (team member)
