More migraines after started taking Nurtec

I used to get migraines with aura perhaps once every three months. Rizatriptin was very good at stopping things before the actual headache started, but it would leave me feeling woozy all day.

So then I started taking Nurtec about six months ago, and it works really well, like Rizatriptin, at preventing the migraine from progressing from aura to actual headache. And what I love is that it doesn't leave me feeling nearly as woozy as Rizatriptin. HOWEVER, I am now getting at least 3 or 4 migraines a month, sometimes even 3 in a week. I NEVER had this many before Nurtec.

So my questions is: is there any chronicled correlation or causation between taking Nurtec and increased migraine frequency? Is anyone else experiencing this?

Thanks!

  1. thanks for taking the time to share your experience with both Rizatriptin and Nurtec. Medications can affect each of us so differently, so it's really helpful for us to learn from one another.

While it's great to hear that Nurtec has been a helpful switch for you, it sounds like it hasn't come without some drawbacks. To your point, the question is, is there a connection to the change in medication or is it unrelated.

These kind of questions can be so challenging because there's often no way to know 100% for sure. That said, you still want and deserve some clarity on it.

I don't have firsthand experience with these medications, but I wanted to pass along a couple discussions here that you might find helpful. Check them out if you'd like and as always, take what resonates and leave what doesn't.

    1. Hi - Sorry to hear you are now having increased migraines. I would get in touch with or set up an appointment with your treating physician and discuss this. This treatment plan may not be optimal for your migraines. There are so many drugs on the list for migraine help. You may need something different. I've not had issues with rizatriptan - it works most times I have migraine. Nurtec didn't seem to help me at all. But as Alene alludes to, we are all different and meds affect us all differently. Professional advice could be your next step. Wishing you the best - Rebecca (team member)

      1. Thanks and - I'll check out the links you mentioned and if it gets worse then I'll definitely have to ask my doc
