NURTEC

My insurance company is now denying coverage for the hydrocodone I have been taking for many years. It is the only thing, aside from occasional use of Firocet, that helps me with chronic daily migraine. Today my neurologist gave me some samples of Nurtec. I am wondering about other peoples' experiences with this medication.

  1. Hi there! As with any medication, experiences can vary quite a bit. For some it's not effective, while for others it helps a little or even a great deal. I know that many people here on the site have either tried or use Nurtec currently. I know Tom Picerno is one -- I am having difficulty tagging him right now, but I will let him know about your question so that he can respond when he has time. For now, I thought you might want to look through some of our other articles and discussions about Nurtec, so here's a link to a search I did:

I hope that helps a bit, and I wish you the best of luck with it! Let us know how you do. -Melissa, migraine.com team

    1. HI there- I was just responding to your other comment regarding the success you've been having with the prior med for years. To that end, I did want to suggest that you at least consider seeing if it's possible to work with your doctor and pharmacy to continue getting that script but paying for it out of pocket. Oddly those kinds of drugs are often the least expensive while the CGRPs (even with insurance) are some of the most costly). This is not to say you shouldn't try it, especially if that is what your doctor is recommending- but it sounds like it is your insurance company, not your doctor, that is recommending the change? Thinking of you as I know changing medications can be stressful. Warmly, Holly (migraine.com team).

      1. Yes, you are absolutely right. My doctor agrees that I should continue using the medication that has served me well for years. Your recommendation to pay out of pocket for the medication I have been using is exactly what my doctor recommended. I am currently looking for the best out of pocket price. Thanks.

    2. I sure can understand how frustrating it is when your insurance carrier creates hurdles for you to jump in order to get a medication that has helped for a long time. Opioids alone can pose some serious challenges now due to some people who have abused the normal processes in obtaining them. I've been in drug retail supervision for many years before having to stop work due in part to migraine disease, and I live in Florida which is a hot spot for opioid abuse scenarios. If you can't get your insurance carrier to accept an appeal to continue to cover your hydrocodone you can always look into a pharmacy that will fill it as a cash script. It is quite an inexpensive drug as it is, but can be a profit maker for many pharmacies. GoodRx helps cover a few versions of the hydrocodone family of drugs so that may also be an option for getting your prescription filled. Nurtec ODT is a drug I am currently taking in combination with Emgality shots and a couple of other abortive measures. Nurtec is also approved for prevention if it is prescribed as such by your doctor as well as an abortive drug. I have had good results with it and since it is a disintegrating tablet I can still manage it even with pretty bad nausea. I'm glad your doctor has given you samples to give it a trial run to see if it will help you during an attack. Like any drug trial, you may need to give it some time to see how it works with your body. I tried Ubrelvy which is a cousin to Nurtec and found after several doses it just wasn't helping to knock back my attacks, but Nurtec was effective for me. If Nurtec works for you I would suggest signing up for their copay assistance program to help get you the best cost on the drug as it is expensive. Here is a link to that site.

Make sure to look at the terms and conditions to see if you will qualify. It only takes a few minutes to apply for the card. When filling the prescription you might be required to get a prior authorization from your doctor before it can be filled. I call it doing the insurance shuffle! A bit annoying but well worth the savings. I hope I was able to give you some useful information. If you have any other questions feel free to ask and we'll try and help you out and give you some support! Wishing you migraine-free days, Tom migraine.com team
