Recommended Medication for Migraine Associated Vertigo

Hello,

A month ago I was diagnosed with otic migraines, which are related to or possibly a variant of MAV. This migraine affects the auditory portion of my ears and periodically induces small amounts hearing loss, which often does not come back. I also get other migraine symptoms (lightheadedness, tingling, headaches, vertigo, etc.) found in many other forms of migraine.

So far, I have tried two prescription medications to treat them. In June I tried propanerol which turned out to be a disaster for my blood pressure, so I had to discontinue the medication within only 2 weeks of starting it (and it only seemed to make the migraines worse). For the past month I have been on nortryptyline as recommended by my neuro-otologist. Despite upping the doseage several times over the past month, I have had absolutely no success with the medication and my hearing loss has progressed more rapidly than before.

Following the very strict migraine diet has also had no results. While I am pretty inactive due to migraines being set off by several forms of exercise and body movements, I do take nice walks and generally sleep very well.

That being said, have other people found greater success with different medications for MAV? I am desperate to try something else as I really don't want to lose any more hearing.

Thanks so much for the help!

  1. Hi Coyotesdawn,

Thank you for your post. Sorry to hear that the medication you have tried to treat MAV has been unsuccessful. It must be so frustrating (to say the least). While I do hope community members chime in with their experiences treating MAV, I thought you would be interested in the following articles - https://migraine.com/blog/migraine-comorbidites-migraine-associated-vertigo/, https://migraine.com/blog/migraine-with-vertigo/, https://migraine.com/migraine-treatment/. They discuss chronic migraine and vertigo. The community member comments may be helpful as well. If you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to reach out. We love hearing from you. Hope you have a lovely day!
