Verapamil efficacy for migraines???

Has anyone tried Verapamil for chronic migraines and has it worked for you ?? I am considering verapamil and asked my neurologist about this drug, but he mentioned that there is no solid studies that validate the efficacy of verapamil for migraines. I did see some promising reviews on drugs.com regarding the usage of verapamil for migraines. I would like to try it, since blood pressure lowering medications like propranolol seem to work for me, but propranolol gave me terrible insomnia and anxiety. I really want to consider other blood pressure lowering medications like verapamil for migraines. Please share your thoughts.

Thank you for your time and help.

  1. you're asking great questions today! Here's an article that may answer may of your questions and concerns about the medication. I also always use my pharmacist to get some of my medication specific questions answered because they have a tremendous database of information about side effects and potential contradictions or interactions that they can tap into. They are a wealth of knowledge and often more accessible than our doctors - especially on holiday weekends like this one.

    1. Hi - Look forward to hearing whether or not you choose to pursue this medication. We'd love to hear whether or not it works for you as I'm sure others are considering it as well. It is fascinating the way that blood pressure medications can have such an impact on migraine. I would think the experience you had with propanolol bodes well for you in that it was helpful overall. Hopefully, a different type of BP med would still carry that efficacy but bring less troublesome side effects. Worth a try.

I wanted to also just acknowledge all that you are taking on by trying new treatments. The process of researching and auditioning treatments is very tiring. I wrote a series of articles on this very challenge that may resonate with you: https://migraine.com/living-migraine/trying-new-treatments-beginning-stages. We are with you as you continue along this part of your journey. Sending love and support, Holly (migraine.com team).

      1. Thank You . Your article is very helpful and I can totally relate to it. I have been through many cycles of hope, excitement, disappointment and confusion with respect to migraine management and I am still learning how to process these emotions.

        1. I'm glad the piece resonated with you. You articulately describe the cycle of emotions related to auditioning new treatments. And all of that on top of managing the challenge of migraine. There have been times that I just have to take a break from trying new treatments. It is an energy-taker and requires that we have some reserves to dedicate to the process. Processing the emotions we encounter is important and takes energy in itself. I do think it can help to share these emotions with others who 'get it'. Migraine can be so isolating- due to the way we often must withdraw from the world to manage the attacks- and because so few people understand what we're up against. It's an invisible disease so we can't identify one another out in the world. I find this site so helpful because it's a gathering place for those living with the condition. There's a lot of compassion and understanding here. So glad you're with us. Warmly - Holly - migraine.com team

        2. it's true, in many ways, migraine is very much an invisible condition and that can make it hard to 'find your people' who can relate and truly understand what you're going through. I think the other challenge to this, is when others think they've had the same experience because they had "a headache too." But anyone in our community knows they are incomparable. To your point, this here is a community of people who "get it" and that's an incredibly comforting and validating experience.
