What does everyone take for migraines?

I’m new to the forum and have been having mild migraines everyday for over a month now. My doctor has suggested I try an antidepressant medication. I have seen people on thes types of medication and it wasn’t good. I’m very hesitant to try that route. Thanks in advance!

  1. HI Nikki08,

    Thank you for your question and being here - we're glad you found us!

    I take an antidepressant for both migraine disease and depression and find it helpful as do many other patients I know. There are other options for migraine prevention than antidepressant. However, amitriptyline (an antidepressant) is often used first for migraine disease prevention. Let me share more information on migraine prevention medication in this article;

    Sometimes it can take a combination of medications and/or supplements to manage migraine disease! I hope others will be along shortly to share their experiences with you.

    1. Hi Nikki,

      There are lots of medications out there to try for migraine prevention. What works for one person may not work for another, and what is ineffective for someone may be another person's perfect solution. You just have to give medications a shot and see how your body reacts.

      The three categories of medications that doctors usually try first are anti-depressants, beta blockers, and anti-convulsants. Some people take two or three of those in combination, plus things like botox.

      1. Hi Nikki08. I am a chronic migraine sufferer and I have used Sumatriptan injectors and they are a god send. When I use them I do the injection in my upper arm. I also take Sumatriptan pills 100 mg. tablets. Talk to your doctor about them. I hope you can find relief.

        1. Hi Nikki08,

          Others have addressed the medication issue. I’m wondering about the other symptoms that usually go along with a migraine attack. Thank goodness the pain is mild for you. How are you managing all the other symptoms? These are what get me. Pain is managble, but after my system is back to normal and all other symptoms are gone, what I thought was mild turned out to be fairly severe.
