Has anyone ever experienced a migraine that starts at the cheekbone and radiates into the temple?

Get this lots of times! Ice-pick pain, or electric bolt pain, and sometimes it changes location….
Sometimes it follows the fracture lines from an old car crash injury. Sometimes it just shoots straight out through my right eye.
It’s a kind of neuralgia following a facial nerve pathway – if you’re lucky your specialist can find you a medication to help neuralgia. Or you can try gentle heat to soothe the triggered nerve. (My topamax is especially for this kind of pain, to reduce the number of false alarms the muscles/nerves ‘feel’) I also carry some small hand-warmer pads to hold against my cheek when I can, if it’s bad.

Does anyone get pain in that area and also from the ear down inside your head? It’s a shooting pain that takes my breath away. When I get this my scalp also hurts as well.

Yes I do. This symptom is new with in the last 2 years. I know if I feel this, I have to take my abortive medication. Any idea of why this happens?

It’s new to me, just started a month ago. It does go away when I take the Maxalt but it took me over a week to figure out that it was a migraine. I thought I had a sinus infection. I’m seeing the doctor on Tuesday for my yearly check & I’m glad since this is a new area for a migraine for me. Read the article Nancy posted, it may give you answers.

    Hi denisestephens,

Great question! It’s not uncommon to experience pain in that area. The trigeminal nerve gets inflamed during a migraine attack. This article details what happens during a migraine attack; https://migraine.com/pro/pathophysiology-of-migraine/.

    I hope that helps!

Mine go the other way. Starts at my left temple, around and behind my left eye, into my cheek. It’s horrible. I always wonder if I’d ever realize I’m having a stroke……….. scary
