Kelloggs cereals

Has anyone gotten migraines after eating Special K cereal?

  1. Hi MaggieG,

Thank you for your question and being part of the Migraine.com discussion forum - we're glad you're here!

Special K hasn't trigger a migraine attack for me, but that doesn't mean it isn't possible. I did look up the ingredients and the only thing that stuck our for me was barley malt extract, which may be a hidden source of MSG, and MSG can be a strong migraine trigger. Take a look at this article for more information; https://migraine.com/blog/locate-hidden-msg-migraine-triggers/.

The best way to identify our triggers is to keep a detailed migraine diary for three months. It's pretty easy to do with all the various apps out there. Let me share trigger identification and management information with you; https://migraine.com/blog/migraine-management-essential-trigger-management/.

I hope that helps - let me know.

    1. That would be my guess too, except it's not unique to Kellogg's cereal, it's in almost all of it. You're safe with Shredded Wheat and porridge if barley malt flavouring is a trigger for you.

      1. Exactly, PlaydohYeti!

        1. It is very possible that your cereal is causing migraines. I have had two doctors tell me this. Most cold cereals are fortified. The chemicals that are sprayed on the cereal to fortify it are proven to cause migraines. General Mills is among the worst. Since learning this, my personal experience has confirmed it time and again.
