Abortives

Hello all -
I have suffered with what I thought were headaches my entire life. I thought it was sinus, air pressure, allergies. Finally after years of taking over the counter meds, I was diagnosed with migraine by a neurologist. I am currently on Emgality injections which are once a month.
Of course I do still get migraines, but they are fewer in number and less intense. I hear others talk about abortives and wonder what are they?
I think my care team said I cannot have an abortive and so when I get a migraine I just lay down with ice on my head. What are the names of some abortives?

  1. "Abortive medicines relieve pain during a migraine attack. They are designed to stop symptoms. They work best when taken as soon as symptoms begin."
    - a great question. I want to leave this link here to some information for you. Hope it helps. https://migraine.com/migraine-treatment/migraine-prescription-drugs If you don't mind me asking, what was their reasoning as to why you should avoid abortive medications? Hope this information is useful. Sending you thoughts of healing. Rebecca (Team member)

    1. ello, Thank for the link. They said an abortive would not mix well with some other medications I am taking.

      1. Most people with migraine, except those with medical restrictions, have a number of things in their migraine tool kit. These include migraine prevention medications, acute (also called abortive) medications, complementary therapies, supplements, devices and lifestyle modifications. I wonder if you could speak with your healthcare provider about a device to work acutely to treat a specific attack? Let me share information on devices with you here;

        I can tell you sinus congestion, changes in the barometric pressure, allergies and more can trigger a nasty attack for some of us. Do you experience attacks frequently? Here's why I ask - episodic migraine (14 or fewer migraine/headache days a month) can transform into chronic migraine (15 or more migraine/headache days a month) fairly quickly, without proper treatment and no one wants to be chronic! Here is information to start you off;
