Always check celiac diseases

I’m doing so much better. I completely forgot about this website. I was diagnosed three years ago with celiac disease after having migraines my whole life and had a very rough 11 months in 2014. I went gluten free and no migraines for 3 years and I have been off topamax for three years which had its own horrible side effect. Please if you have migraines go get a test for celiac disease. It is the number one symptoms and the most undiagnosed disease

  1. Hi Sunshine!

Thank you for sharing that with us! I'm happy to hear you are feeling better.

    Nancy

    1. I was diagnosed with celiac disease three years ago and I rarely have a migraine now. It is something that people should be aware of. I had migraines for thirty years and it's so much better having fewer migraines now.

      1. wow, what an incredible turnaround. It's interesting because there are quite a few people that find relief in both the intensity as well as the frequency of migraine attacks after they remove gluten from their diet. Not all of them have celiac, but perhaps a sensitivity to it, that impacts migraine.

How are you doing with a gluten free diet now? Have you felt any other help benefits since going gluten free? Thankfully there are so many more GF food options available now, even in restaurants too.

    2. Thank you for sharing! How are you doing managing celiac disease? Was there a steep learning curve, so to speak?
There was a small study showing people with Celiac disease had a higher occurrence of migraine disease and I know a number of people who have both diseases. As if one chronic condition isn't enough!!
Good to hear migraine attacks have reduced - always good news! I hope you have a wonderful day, Nancy Harris Bonk, Patient Leader/Moderator Migraine.com Team

      1. - We really appreciate you sharing your experience. It's incredible to hear that since being diagnosed with celiac disease and likely making dietary changes to manage it, you've noticed a significant improvement in your migraine frequency. It's well-documented that certain dietary factors can influence migraine frequency and severity, and for some individuals, identifying and addressing food triggers can lead to substantial relief.

Your story highlights the importance of considering dietary factors in the management of migraines and other chronic conditions. It also emphasizes the significance of proper diagnosis and treatment of underlying medical conditions, as addressing these issues can have a profound impact on overall health and well-being.

Wishing you the best in 2024. Rebecca (community moderator)
