When is it the “right” medication?!

I was finally diagnosed with migraines after suffering from daily headaches for nearly a year. I started taking Amitriptyline and I swear the first day I slept like a baby. It gave me instant relief from the pain and helped me sleep as I had been getting 3-4 hours of interrupted sleep over the last 9-10 months. The problem is that I also instantly gained weight. I was switched to topirimate which started out ok but now my symptoms are slowly coming back.

Has this happened to anyone else? I will contact my dr again but it would be nice to hear from others who experience migraines. None of my family/friends are migraine sufferers. I feel silly about the weight issue but wonder if I should go back? I also don’t want these awful headaches so I hope there is something else available. Thank you.

  1. Hi littlejen,

Great question!! Amitriptyline works wonders for some people, but also makes it easier for some of us to gain weight, I know I did!!

Topamax is another medication that works wonders for some, not so much for others. I do know Topamax needs to be started at 25mg once a day for a week and increased slowly. Thus will help reduce potential side effects and was designed to be taken that way for migraine attack prevention. A dose adjuomay be necessary

    1. Sorry about that- hit post too soon!!

I was saying a dose adjustment may be necessary at this point.

Don’t lose hope! There are over 100 medications, supplements and devices that can be used to treat migraine disease. Here is an article that may help; https://migraine.com/blog/migraine-preventives-start/.

      I hope this helps!
