anxiety

I have recently read that unmanaged migraines can lead to generalized anxiety. Has anyone heard of this, experienced this & if so, conquered this?

  1. Hey there! Welcome to Migraine.com, and thanks for posting your question. Generalized anxiety and migraine are two fairly common overlapping conditions, so it's my hope that a few community members will chime in on the conversation soon to share their experience. However, as far as I'm aware, untreated or unmanaged migraines cannot cause generalized anxiety. However, untreated anxiety most certainly could increase the frequency of migraine attacks one experiences, or it could increase the number of migraine episodes that someone has. If you're concerned about having generalized anxiety, or are wondering if it's impacting your migraines, the best thing you could do is talk to a qualified mental health professional about your symptoms. They will be able to help you determine how your anxiety impacts your migraines, and help you create a treatment plan that best fits your needs. Here at migraine.com, we have some general information about anxiety and how it impacts migraine, which you can find here: https://migraine.com/generalized-anxiety-disorder-overview. However, this information isn't a replacement for talking it over with a qualified mental health professional. You can find additional information about psychotherapy, if that feels like a good fit for you and your treatment plan here: https://migraine.com/mental-health/coping-psychotherapy. We also have an article about common mental health myths which may be helpful: https://migraine.com/mental-health/myths-facts.

    1. Hi
Thank you for reaching out to us. You're not alone in living with anxiety - I sure do. As mentioned. migraine and anxiety can occur at the same time, and anxiety can be a symptom during a migraine attack. It's not that migraine causes anxiety or vice versa, they just happen to occur together for many of us.
I find anxiety to be tough. Some days are easier than others. I see a therapist every once in a while for a "tune up" to help with this. That may be something to check into.
Will you keep me posted on how you are doing? Nancy Harris Bonk, Patient Leader/Moderator Migraine.com Team

      1. Hi, and welcome to our community. Thanks for reaching out with your question. I think the other moderators that posted gave some excellent information. I find that my migraine attacks feed off anxiety, and then once I'm in an attack, the anxiety worsens. I do have a therapist who has helped immensely. But there is no shame in taking medication if you also need it. Please keep us posted on your well-being. It's tough to deal with migraine disease and anxiety.
