Beach Travel?

I'm planning a beach vacation next year for my 40th birthday. I love beaches, but I haven't been since my migraines have gotten bad. For those of you who are light and heat triggered, like me, are there any coping mechanisms you have in order to actually enjoy a vacation?

I'm already ordering mirrored, sunglasses-like swim goggles. Wondering what else I should plan for.

  1. Thanks for posting your question, . This sounds like an exciting trip. I personally went through a period of intense heat intolerance due to a medication I was taking. At the time, I found it helpful to find shade as much as possible. That may include having a wide-brimmed hat or even using an umbrella to shield you from the sun. You can also wear long, thin clothing that blocks the sun. I've also heard of people buying clothing with SPF resistance in them, however I've never tried them myself. You can find different options by googling "sun protection clothing". Hope that helps until others are able to chime in and share their experience. - Cody (Team Member)

    1. Thanks. When I'm at the beach, I don't tend to stay on the sand a lot. I love, love, love to swim. So I'll probably mostly be in the water.

      1. Hi - Cody has some great ideas. I know this might sound weird, but have you considered taking a cooling vest should you become symptomatic/overheated? Here in Arizona many motorcycle riders or those working outdoors in the extreme heat during the summer wear them. May help. And, definitely take your migraine cap or ice pack in the cooler should you overheat. Better to be ready than suffer through a migraine - especially on your birthday! Wishing you the best. 1. Don't forget to pack foods and drinks that are nourishing (and not triggering, if you have food triggers). That might mean a sports drink or a bottled iced coffee/tea if caffeine helps your migraine symptoms ... I like to bring fruit because it's pretty hydrating.

I love that you're doing this. Keep us updated as it gets closer! You're setting yourself up for success by planning ahead, I think. 😀 -Melissa, team member
