Botox & Mid-Sleep Migraines

Hi! Hoping for some help.

I had LIFE-CHANGING results cycle 2. 5 migraines in Oct, 4 in Nov, 3 in Dec (!!!!! Never happens !!!!!). Used to wake from migraines 1x month for many months over the last year. This stopped for Oct-Dec. Got a crazy 72-hour migraine in Jan. 4 total. 5 in Feb. Woke up from a migraine mid-sleep today for the first time in 5.5 months.

Has my treatment stopped working?

Does this mean Botox isn’t working? I’m so upset. I see an increase and back to mid-sleep migraines which freak me out. Help!

  1. Hi ,

Thank you for reaching out to us with your question. I hear how concerned you are about Botox not working. The thing is migraine prevention medications don't 'cure' migraine disease, rather reduce the frequency and severity of our attacks.

I understand your worry; I've been getting Botox since 8/16 and go through the same thing when I have a "bad" month. I also find I have to be vigilant about my triggers as it nears the time for my next series of injections. Any chance this recent attack is near the time for Botox?

Forgive me if we've discussed this before, but have you had a sleep study? When we wake with migraine pain, it may be an indication of a sleep issue of which there are many. I was waking with daily migraine pain, had a sleep study and discovered I have restless leg and periodic limb movement disorder. These were both contributing to my morning pain. I'm treating them with a muscle relaxer and medical cannabis and wake with fewer morning attacks.

Please keep me posted on how you are doing and fee free to share your thoughts with me!

    1. Hi. I am 3 weeks out but this happened 2 weeks ago. I have a new pattern of waking up with a migraine. I had this yesterday and today. This is migraine # 5 and the month is only halfway over. I am sure I will get at least one or two more. This will be a major increase. I was getting 3-4 on cycle 2. Cycle 3 was 1/12. I had 4 migraines in Jan, 5 in Feb and now this. Should I be worried? I thought Cycle 3 would be better or at least the same. Not worse. Botox is my last hope.

      1. Hi ,

I hear your worry and I don't blame you. Try not to lose hope, there are over 100 medications, supplements, devices and complementary therapies that can be used to treat migraine disease. Forgive me if I've mentioned this before! And new things coming out on the horizon. Lots to be hopeful about.

For some it can take four or more rounds of Botox injections to see a difference.

May I ask what type of doctor you see? Have we discussed seeing a true migraine/headache disease expert before?

        Let me know!
