CoQ10

Has anyone had relief taking CoQ10 to prevent migraines?

  1. welcome to the migraine.com community! We are glad you're here! Taking supplements or nutraceuticals is something that many people do to help manage their migraine disease. CoQ10 is a good one to add to your preventative regimen as are B12 and magnesium. My husband and I both have these as part of our preventative regimen and they seem to help with the overall management of the disease. I would suggest talking with your doctor about taking any supplement to see if it might be a good fit for you, and also to see what the recommended dose would be for you to take. Migraine disease is very individualistic and what helps one person may not help another. How long have you been suffering from migraine and are you seeing a specialist or doctor for it? Warmly, Cheryl migraine.com team

    1. Hi Cheryl,
I have had migraines for decades, but they have been more often in the past year. I see an APRN at a headache center. I tried 400 mg of riboflavin to prevent migraines, but developed hives from it! Now I’m trying CoQ10.

My frustration is that I need to take Imitrex or Maxalt to knock the headache out, yet they say you can get rebound headaches from both medications. I get 2-3 headaches a week. Plus, I can only get 9 pills per month of each.

      1. This is the frustration many feel when prescribed Imitrex / Maxalt - a limited supply and rebound headaches when taken more than prescribed and not helping. I've tried CoQ10 but saw no response. I was taking a recommended dose of other supplements to prevent migraines when I began a new Rx for a different problem. My migraines worsened 3 fold. I had to stop the supplements due to serious drug interaction. Be careful what you take, especially since you've had that type of reaction to riboflavin. And definitely speak with your physician about what you are using. As stated above - Migraine disease is very individualistic and what helps one person may not help another. Here is a link discussing the pros and cons of CoQ10 - https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements-coenzyme-q10/art-20362602 Can you discuss a preventative prescription in addition to the abortive Rx when you see your APRN next? May be an option. Rebecca (comm advc)

    2. Have you tried CBD or acupuncture? I tried Nurtec, but it only got rid of the headache once or twice out of ten times of trying it.
