Does anyone here prescribed with Haloperidol or antipsychotic as preventive?

I suffer from Cluster Headache and I've gone to several doctors (neurologists as well) and they found nothing until I went to a psychiatrist and was prescribed Haloperidol and Sertraline. It does help me a lot with my migraine. It feels like I never had a migraine before. but it gives me several side effects such as impaired thinking and I become forgetful. I'm afraid it'll affect me in long-term use. I haven't done a CT scan or MRI though, but it is safe to take antipsychotics as a migraine cure?

  1. Hi there- that's interesting to hear. We have heard community members report the use of Haldol as a rescue medication. I cannot find a reference to its employment as a preventative for migraine. Folks who use it as a rescue do mention issues with side effects like the ones you've mentioned and that's with short-term use. These are really good questions you are asking and would be best asked of your doctor. I might encourage you to seek an evaluation with a migraine specialist if this script and your treatment are continuing to come from a psychiatrist. Migraine specialists are specifically trained in the neurological condition of migraine and are aware of all of the current treatments out there (of which there are now many more available).
