Hello

Hello, it's nice to meet you. I'm Robin. I'm 22 and have been dealing with what seems to be episodic migraines. I'm typing this as I'm in bed right now with pain behind both eyes with the right eye being more intense. I got triggered just by going outside in this weather. I know I don't have chronic migraines, but I experience headaches and migraines frequently, experiencing them 1-3 times a week at most. I also have autism and severe asthma on top of those, so I'm trying my best to accommodate for myself. I cannot see a doctor for this because I am already seeing a handful of others for my lungs. I honestly feel bad reaching out for help because I don't have chronic migraines, but I have had to miss out on special events because of it (I came home from a fourth of July party two years ago throwing up my water because it was too bright and overcast outside). The severity of my migraines vary, this one feeling moderate. All I can really do is avoid the sunlight and loud sounds. I know I'm at least extremely sensitive to light, I'm just looking for ways to cope with migraines that don't go away by drinking water and ways to manage it without going to the doctor or having a prescription. Thank you for listening, it means a lot to me!

  1. Hello, , and welcome! I'm so glad that you've joined our community here and reached out. Please don't feel bad about not being diagnosed with chronic migraine or for reaching out! This community can be a support for anyone who understands the pain of migraine or supports someone who lives with migraine. And, although I'm not a doctor, it's certainly possible that you do, in fact, fit the criteria for migraine disorder. (Here's a link to an article about how migraine is diagnosed, https://migraine.com/migraine-diagnosis)

Unfortunately, photophobia is a common occurrence with migraine, so you aren't alone in finding lights and sounds triggering and challenging. We do have this article about the topic, which includes some ideas/tips/tricks for managing, https://migraine.com/migraine-symptoms/sensitivity-to-light. Hopefully some of the community members with personal experience can also chime in and share with you here also. One of our health leaders also wrote about her personal experience and how she manages light, which I'll link here also, https://migraine.com/living-migraine/managing-light.

Please don't hesitate to reach out here, whether you have questions, need to vent, or could use some support. I do hope that you get some relief from your current migraine quickly! -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

    1. Hey, Robin. Welcome! Glad you're here. It's tough to be dealing with migraine, no matter how often it happens, especially when you're juggling multiple health issues.

One thing I want you to know is that episodic migraine frequently turns into chronic migraine if you don't get proper treatment. Your migraines are just as worthy of treatment as your lungs. Even if you "just" work with your GP, it's better than going without treatment and a plan for management.

Kerrie offers a few suggestions for non-prescription treatments here:

There are a wide variety of non-prescription treatments that can be useful with or without other things. Here are two articles that make a good starting place:
