How to take Nurtec?

My doc recently prescribed Nurtec ODT for me to treat and prevent migraines. He gave me some samples and they worked but I had a question about how I could take it, given it only comes in the dissolvable tabs. He said they came that way because so many people dealt with nausea. That’s not one of my symptoms and I noticed if I took them the way the pamphlet wants me to, it took 15 mins for it to dissolve and tasted pretty bad. And still took an hour to kick in.
So my question is: can I just chew it and wash it down with something that will mask the taste, or is that somehow going to affect the delivery system?
Thx

  1. There's no best time of day to take Nurtec ODT. If you're using Nurtec ODT to prevent migraine episodes, take it every other day as your doctor directs. If you're using Nurtec ODT to treat a migraine episode, take your dose as soon as you feel migraine symptoms.

    1. , that's good advice. I think a lot of people are afraid that with limited doses it might not be sever enough to "waste" resources, when there may be a worse one down the line that month. It's sad that people are forced to make those decisions. - Warmly, Donna (team member)

  2. Hi
Thank you for your question. I don't believe Nurtec is intended to be chewed and is meant to be dissolved. You may want to check with your doctor for other options. At this point, I wouldn't suggest chewing it. Let me know how you make out, Nancy Harris Bonk, Patient Leader/Moderator Migraine.com Team

    1. , as Nancy said, Nurtec is not meant to be chewed, but you can place it on your tongue or under it. My husband finds it dissolves quickly when placed on the tongue rather than under it. He also says the more saliva you have, the faster it will dissolve. If the taste bothers you swishing with water to cleanse your palette may be helpful. There are quite a few medications that taste pretty awful! You can also ask your doctor or a pharmacist for recommendations to help make taking it more pleasing. I hope Nurtec works well for you moving forward. Warmly, Cheryl migraine.com team

      1. - Hi there- I just wanted to chime in to share this resource in case it could offer you any good information (please just skip to the community feedback section) as it's a piece that calls for community experience with Nurtec (and Ubrevly). Perhaps there will be something in there you can use: https://migraine.com/video/ubrelvy-nurtec-side-effects. Thinking of you- Holly (migraine.com team).
