Hypnic headaches

I’ve suffered with migraine most of my life. Had a few years gap in middle age but started with daily ( actually nightly) migraine/headaches nearly 10 years ago. I was diagnosed with Hemicrania Continua. I have tried many preventatives, abortive, GON, have tried stopping eating anything I think could be the cause and nothing has helped. The structure of my headaches have changed again. Although I still have nightly headaches they are not as often, maybe 4 a week. The headaches always go with shoulder/neck pain and lately I have been rubbing volterol into my neck and shoulder twice a day. I’m thinking it’s working. Early days but fingers crossed and hoping. also acupuncture. Has helped

  1. Did you notice right away that if you took the preventative measures of addressing the neck and shoulder pain then you didn't have as many migraines? This is great that it seems to be helping. Do you know what's causing the neck and shoulder pain? I hope you continue to get relief and hopefully continue to see a reduction in those nightly headaches. Please keep us updated. 1. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. You're not alone in dealing with the complex nature of migraine and headache - we're here for you!
      Neck pain can be complicated as well. It can be a trigger and symptom of an attack. Has your doctor investigated whether there is a problem with your cervical spine? There is a type of headache called cervicogenic that stems from issues in your neck and of course it's possible to have more than one type of migraine and/or headache disorder. Here is information on cervicogenic headache; https://migraine.com/blog/some-headaches-are-caused-by-neck-problems and https://migraine.com/stories/no-longer-stranger.
      Hemicrania continua (HC) can be tricky for some doctors to diagnose and treat. The thing is there is a treatment that you can read about here;
      https://migraine.com/living-migraine/another-migraine-look-alike. For many with HC, indomethacin treats it very nicely.
      I noticed your topic headline is hypnic headache? Do you also experience this? Let me share our information on this: https://migraine.com/living-migraine/nighttime-headaches-after-age-50. The headline says after age 50, but that is not absolute.
      I've given you a lot to take in, so I'll stop now so I don't totally overwhelm you. I hope you let me know what you think!
