Increasing migraines

I thought about trying a nerve block for my migraines. It sounds promising. I know it doesn't work for everyone. Had anyone ever tried this? It's done in the neck around the occipital nerve.

  1. Hi - Hopefully more community members will be along shortly to share their experience. In the meantime, we have a variety of articles discussing nerve blocks of various types. Check out these links for some more info: https://migraine.com/living-migraine/nerve-block-injections-back-pain and https://migraine.com/forums/occipital-nerve-block. I'm also going to tag since she's had these done before. Perhaps she will have something to add! - Cody (Team Member)

    1. thank you

  2. I've had increasing migraines for 20 years and now average about 20 or more a month.
I've had many procedures including medial branch nerve blocks with little success.
From my understanding occipital nerve blocks are not covered by insurance nonetheless l am going to look into it, as l am at my wits end with these things.
    Hoping you find relief !

    1. oh my. Wow. I'm glad you do have a great neurologist. I love it when we have rapport with our providers. Mine is great too. He will suggest things but asks if there's anything I want to add also. All we can do is keep trying to relieve our symptoms. Hang in there!! (Tonya, team member).

    2. Thanks, you as well

  3. I am now going to try botox treatments starting next week. I hope it works for me. I don't want to be on anymore medications. It just keeps growing. And I'm in a brain fog all the time. Had anyone found relief with botox?

    1. yes I did. About a week ago. Still getting migraines. But maybe not as much. Maybe it's too soon for it to do anything. my doctor said it could take 2 or 3 different treatments before I would notice. I hope this works because they're isn't much else left for me to try. Thanks for your concern

    2. Hi
I hope you don't mind if I chime in here share my experience with Botox. I got my first set of injections in 8/2016 and it took four rounds of it before I noticed an improvement. It's made a huge difference in my attack frequency reducing them to about 12-15 down from 25-28 days a month. That's a win for me! While Botox isn't a cure, it can go a long way in helping reduce attack frequency and severity. My acute medication, sumatriptan nasal spray has also been more effective. Try not to lose hope - we're here for you!

  4. I've done it a couple times when I've been in a massive migraine that lasted more than a week. And it does help. But it also makes me really sleepy, groggy, and non-functional, so I can't do it on a work day.

    1. thanks so much for sharing. Its encouraging to hear that it brought you relief, although it came with the side effects. Many of the effective relief tools can wipe you out for the day. Sometimes I do find that helpful though if it means helping to sleep better through an attack.
