Is this a migraine ?

My son (14) has been having severe headaches each morning and vomiting that slowly gets better during the day. This has been going on for 6 days. We have had two hospital visits with no diagnosis or treatment apart from fluids and paracetamol/ibuprofen. His pain level is a 9 in the mornings. Falls asleep for a few hours from 10 am and then after around 3pm he is back to “normal” with a head pain level of 3/4 rather than 9/10. Can a migraine go on this long and does it sound like a migraine - has anyone had any similar experiences?

  1. I am so sorry to hear about your son. There are people who have had a migraine for more than a few hours or days. I am not sure what is going on with your son and I am not a doctor. As a mother, I know it is difficult to see your child suffer and no one has answers yet. I did want to share these with you though so you can read on some others experiences: https://migraine.com/stories/status-migrainous

Personally, I have gone to one hospital where I did not think they were doing a sufficient job. The next day, I sought care elsewhere. You do have the right to seek a second opinion or go to a different hospital. I hope that you find answers soon.
Let us know how your son is doing and if you find out what is going on with him. Sending hugs and hopes for answers soon. (Tonya, team member).

    1. Thank you for sharing your son's difficult journey. We understand how difficult and frustrating it is to see our children (no matter their age) in pain.
Extended head pain is always something to look into and I wish I could tell you what's happening with your son.
How is your son's sleep? Irregular sleeping schedules (too much and/or too little) can be a role in head pain as well as any sleep disorders, of which there are many.
I could encourage you to continue to seek out help from his doctors. Does he have a pediatrician you can get him into?
I know this is frustrating, and I wish I had a better answer for you. Will you please keep us posted on how he's doing? I'm sending wishes that your son has a low pain day, Nancy Harris Bonk, Patient Leader/Moderator (team member)

      1. Hi. I'm so glad you're here asking questions and trying to learn what you can -- hopefully we can walk with you as you're figuring all this out.

First, how has this week been? Any changes?

Also, if you feel comfortable sharing, I'm curious to know a little more about the care he got in the emergency room. Did they do any scans of his head, an eye test, take bloodwork? Even if those tests are inconclusive, it can help rule out some conditions as a starting point.

It can be really difficult to pin down what triggers a migraine, even for adults who have had them throughout their lives. Whether or not the diagnosis is migraine, it might be helpful to keep some simple notes of what is happening from day to day. Amount of sleep, food, description of symptoms, when they stopped, how he felt after. That info can be helpful, especially if you're seeing new doctors or continue to investigate this over a longer period.

I really hope you all can get to the bottom of this soon. Keep us posted, okay? And remember to take good care of yourself too in the midst of caring for your son. -Melissa, team member
