Is it true that Magnesium helps?

I heard Magnesium my help with Migraines.... is this true and if so how to take it

    I take 500 mg of magnesium oxide daily per my doctors instructions, I'd like to believe its helping.

    1. I take magnesiam oxide 500, for years, I believe it may help as I don't have near as many as I use to. My dr. told me to buy over the counter from my pharmacist (it's not a percription) said it's more benifical & pharmacy I buy from is less expensive then shelved product.

      1. I take ionic magnesium (50mg elemental magnesium - measured differently than your other supplements). Magnesium oxide ruined my gut at low levels (very hard to absorb and I have a poor digestive system as it is) - it's used as a laxative for a reason ...... magnesium citrate powder is easier to absorb and nicer on your stomach, I can take about 300mg at a time twice a day).

        There also is an "oil" ... (more like watered down body gel) that you rub on your skin, let sit 20 minutes and then wash off). I felt a major decrease in muscle/joint pain and increased sleep using it but my skin dried out and got very itchy from it (also very common for me, I react to most lotions/body washes etc).

        I then spent the money after reasearching and got magnesium glycinate - the newest and most easily absorbed form available. Was in pills but quite pricy.

        My current pain management doctor stocked and recommends the ionic version of it (honestly I haven't researched the difference and have never seen it stocked anywhere else in a store). But it's cheaper than the glycinate, good tasting liquid and seems to help. I definitely have more pain if I miss doses for a few days.

        Worth a try - I would recommend going to a health food store or supplement store to buy instead of rexall, or a grocery store - then have the better forms and companies.

        1. My headache specialist recommends 400mg taken twice a day. She also recommends riboflavin 200mg twice a day and CoQ10 300mg in am. I take 1200mg magnesium total daily because of the iron I also take and its binding effect. Taking these had made a huge improvement in both frequency and severity.
          With these reduced, I've been able to exercise regularly which is also a very effective preventative! best wishes!
