Managing the Quilpta side effects

I have chronic migraines and I started Quilpta 30mg recently this week, its too early to say if it's working already for the migraines. The main side effect for me is the constipation.I am taking magnesium and motility activator(ginger + artichoke extract), but it seems my GI needs additional support to beat this terrible side effect. I have gas, bloating, pain that radiates to pelvic region and back due to constipation.

Some other side effects I experience are more burping, weird feeling in throat( its not even a dry throat), the weird feeling goes away after coughing. I might have to go up all the way to 60mg, but not sure how I am going to do that with my side effects.

For those of you on Quilpta, Did you have constipation side effect and can you please share some pointers to help manage this side effect.

Thank you in advance for your time and help.

  1. Hi
Thank you for starting this conversation. We've heard from many who experience profound constipation while taking CGRP medications. Below are a few links with conversations on this and other potential side effects.

    I've dealt with horrendous constipation while on was on methadone for migraine, a LONG time ago. It was awful I found this fruit paste to be very helpful. I had one large tablespoon each night. Let me share it with you here;

Yakima Valley Anti Constipation Fruit Paste
    1 lb pitted prunes
4 oz senna tea leaves (at health foods store)
    1 lb raisins
    1 lb figs
    1 cup lemon juice
    1. Prepare tea; use about 2 1/2 cups boiled water, add to tea leaves and steep for 5 minutes.
    2. Strain tea and remove tea leaves.
    3. Place 2 cups of tea, or amount left, in large pot.
    4. Add all of the fruit to the tea.
    5. Boil fruit and tea for 15 - 20 minutes, until soft.
    6. Remove from heat and add lemon juice. Allow to cool.
    7. Use hand mixer/blender or food processor to turn fruit and tea mix into a paste.
    8. Place in glass jars or Tupperware and place in freezer (paste will not freeze but will keep forever in freezer also very long in fridge).
    DOSAGE: 1 - 2 Tablespoons per day

Hope this is beneficial. Will you let me know? Nancy Harris Bonk, Patient Leader/Moderator Migraine.com Team Member

    1. Thank you so much for taking the time to write to me and share information on the Quilpta forums. The forums are super helpful and I will review them to discover some pointers that might be helpful.

I am impressed by your holistic approach to treat constipation with natural remedies. I appreciate your thorough step by step instruction for the recipe and it is extremely helpful, since I am more inclined towards natural remedies rather than medications.

    2. My pleasure! I'm a firm believer in the more we know the better we can advocate for our healthcare.
If you give the fruit paste a try please let me know what you think!
