My Migraine Auras have changed.....

My migraines began when I was a child. I remember them being so bad that my parents would haul me off to the ER because they were scared it was something more serious. About a year after having my first child, I had my first migraine aura. In the onset of the aura, I start seeing half of things and then the classic pulsating C shows up in both of my eyes. A couple of years ago, I went to a neurologist because these types of auras became more frequent. He had me take magnesium and vitamin B2, as well as chart my migraine auras. I also cut out dairy, meat, and gluten. I have not had one of those auras since. BUT, I do get another type frequently which is frustrating. I told the neurologist and my eye doctor (and retina doctor) about them. They didn't seem concerned. SO, my other type of aura....I will get a bright spot in the center of my vision in either my right or left eye. It's like I have looked at a light bulb but haven't. Sometimes I don't notice them unless I look at a bright background (it will appear as a bright spot in the sky or on a white background). Sometimes they are quick but sometimes they will last for 40 minutes. I am so frustrated because I feel like I am super healthy! I exercise regularly, eat healthy, get regular physicals, have low cholesterol, etc. Anyone else experience these types of auras? The funny part is that due to my diet.....I rarely get painful migraines anymore, just these annoying auras!!!

  1. Hi BeckyL1717,

Thank you for reaching out to us and sharing your story. I'm sure others will be along soon to help out with this topic. In the meantime, let me see if I can help.

It's good to hear you've been in contact with your doctors about this aura. Even though its common for our migraine patterns and symptoms to change over time, it's always a good idea to let the doctor know when this happens, so they can make sure everything checks out. Seeing as you've done this but are still concerned, you may want to have another conversation with the doctor (s) to express these concerns.

Maybe keep a diary of how often you are getting these aura's and show that to the doctor. By doing so, you may be able to figure out if anything is triggering them. Worth a try!!

Wishing you a low pain day,

    1. Hello BeckyL1717, thank you for sharing with the community. I hear how frustrating this resurgence of aura symptoms feels for you. While we cannot offer medical advice over the internet (for your safety!) what you are describing sounds like it could be silent migraine, where the headache phase is absent from an attack. This article gives some introductory information you may find of interest: You are not alone experiencing visual aura disturbances. I thought this article might also resonate:
It is wonderful you have been able to manage your migraine symptoms so well through dietary changes! I appreciate how it makes these aura symptoms feel that much more annoying though. I hope if others have had similar experiences they will stop by to share with you. Please keep us posted on how you are managing. Wishing you a gentle day. ~Allyson ( team)
