So confused

So confused by my psychologist and what he is saying about my abortive meds. I am using him mostly for my questions about them since he is part of the headache clinic I'm on the wait list for their doctor and Joel knows more about headaches than my family doctor. When pain gets bad my mood nose dives and I have a very hard time handling it lately.

Last appointment Joel told me I had to treat the pain and suggest I take meds earlier when the pain reaches 6/10 and that would lower the days of 8/10 that I would spend miserable in bed and not medicating. I wasn't taking meds because I wasn't taking pain meds more than 10 days a month - it was a miserable life.

Well a month later, mood is better because I'm not in severe pain day after day but I used pain meds on 20 days. And Joel told me I had to stop using them so often because I had medication overuse headache and it won't improve until I dropped the medication use down. Aaaaaaahhhhh.

No idea what to do .... I'm on preventatives, Botox, supplement, manual treatments - prolotherapy, massage, Chiro, acupuncture. I already try oils, ice and relaxation before I take the meds to see if I can lower the pain before having to use them. I hate migraines.

  1. Hi Tamara,

Thank you for your post. It sounds like your journey with chronic migraine has been long and at times frustrating. I am sorry to hear that. Please know we hear you, here at, and we definitely understand you. It is good to hear that you are seeing a specialist at a headache clinic. Hopefully once you begin seeing the specialist they will be able to provide you with some additional treatment options. Even though you already mentioned using some natural self care techniques, I thought you would be interested in the following articles -,, which both list self care tips for managing symptoms while experiencing an attack. The community member comments are informative and perhaps you will find something helpful! Again, thank you for your post. Please continue to keep us posted on your progress. We love hearing from you. Hope you have a lovely day.
