Studies done on Peri-menopause and Migraine?

I read this article https://migraine.com/living-with-migraine/hemiplegic-migraine-menopause/ and I was wondering if studies have been done on peri-menopause and migraines? I find hope that when I get into menopause the attacks may decrease. Peri-menopause has brought on an increase of attacks.

  1. Hi Ronan,

    I'm sorry to hear you've seen an increase in migraine attack frequency during
    peri-menopause, I understand how frustrating that is.

    I found a few studies I hope you find helpful; https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4548761/
    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3311830/.

    And this article looks interesting; https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-menopause-migraines/migraines-may-worsen-before-menopause-idUSKCN0V42N6.

    We do have some numbers on migraine and menopause and they look like this;
    After spontaneous or "natural" menopause:
    67% of women find their migraine attacks get better;
    9% of women find their migraine attacks get worse; and
    24% of women find their migraine attacks don't change at all.
    However, when it comes to surgical menopause (after a hysterectomy) it's an entirely different story:.
    After surgical menopause:
    33% of women find their migraine attacks get better;
    67% of women find their migraine attacks get worse;
    and a statistically insignificant number of women find their migraine attacks don't change at all.

    I hope this helps!
    Nancy
