What helped me

Hi, I want to share my experience and tell people what helped me with my Migraine which was very intensive at the time.

I am 39 now and have had Migraine attacks since I was 24. In the beginning, they were coming now and then so I was treating them with painkillers and the last couple of years the attacks were happening every day so I had to ask for help from a doctor.

After a couple of meds which failed, the one that worked the first year was 50mg of Topiramate, with no side effects at that time.

About a year later, the same thing extreme headaches every day, exactly the same as cluster headaches. The doctor gave me Topiramate again but this time didn't work the same so he increased the dose to 100mg a day which eventually helped me to decrease the pain but I was still having attacks a few times a week. This time with cognitive side effects, I couldn't even work properly, having brain fog constantly etc.

At this point, I could live somehow better but I was very restrictive on my diet, avoiding Tyramine, dairy products and no caffeine at all, I must go to sleep very early otherwise I would have a headache, and I could not have any physical activity like gym, running no chance headache straight away, even if I walked a bit faster I was going to have a headache and I explained this to my doctor he didn't know what it is. My brain fog was getting worse and very often I had a strong need to close my eyes.

What changed everything for me at this point were supplements.

First, I need to mention that my blood test showed my D level is 29 which is extremely low so the doctor prescribed me D3 3200IU and I started taking also K2 100mg. I think the low vitamin D was playing a big role in my Migraine attacks and recovery period.

Now, you probably all know about these vitamins which are recommended for Migraine but I didn't at this time and visiting this website
https://migrainetrust.org/live-with migraine/healthcare/treatments/supplements/

I started taking:
B2 Riboflavin - 400mg
Magnesium - 400mg
CoQ10 - 150mg

From day 2 everything changed. I felt energized, the brain fog disappeared and most importantly until today( three and a half months), I have not had a headache at all.

After a while, I still couldn't consume coffee, after trying to have one I was feeling pressure in the back part of my head. This changed when I started taking the antioxidant Alpha Lipoic Acid and now I can have coffee again with no problems at all.

- To sum up, I strongly recommend checking your D level and trying to get it at least to 100.

- Try these three vitamins if you haven't tried them, they worked for me:
B2 - 400mg
Magnesium - 400mg
CoQ10 - 150mg

- Get familiar with other antioxidants like Alpha Lipoic Acid and B1 (Benfotiamine), they worked in my case.

I believe that my Migraine was caused by mitochondrial dysfunction and impaired antioxidant status. All these vitamins, including the antioxidants, help the cellular energy in the body and the mitochondrial energy.

Also, don't give up on Topiramate so quickly just because of the side effects. In my case the side effects disappeared in about of couple of months, the body get used to it. I believe it depends on the age as well.

I hope this may help to someone else as well.

  1. Thanks so much for taking the time to share what's worked well for you, . It sounds like you've done a lot of great research to determine which supplements would help you the most. To live nearly migraine free is a true blessing. I hope that it's allowed you to spend time doing things that you bring you joy and given you a renewed sense of inner peace.

    1. Thank you for sharing your strategy for preventing and treating migraine. The supplements you use are ones that I've heard about before- coupled together as a migraine preventative cocktail, as it were. The coQ10, magnesium, and b12. Appreciate your sharing the dosages you've found useful. I agree about the Topamax regarding how the side effects tend to quiet over time. They can be troubling at first but within a couple months, the brain adjusts and the brain fog (the most troubling side effect) seems to dissipate, thankfully.
Again, appreciate your sharing how you've come to find success with treating and managing this very tricky condition. Glad you're with us! Warmly - Holly (team member)
