What' your experience with Ajovy or Propranolol as a preventive

Male, age 69. Long time migraine patient, chronic without aura. I don't like the idea of a daily med but migraines have become too frequent. Rescue meds are Naratriptan and Ubrelvy. They work most of the time. I have a new Neurologist who recommended Ajovy or Propranolol.

  1. Hi
Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I understand how frustrating it is to have frequent migraine attacks and not wanting to be on medications. Here's the thing - episodic migraine (14 or fewer migraine/headache days a month) can transform into chronic migraine (15 or more migraine/headache days a month) fairly quickly, without proper treatment and no one wants to be chronic!
Propranolol is typically a first line treatment for migraine and is one of the first drugs FDA approved for migraine prevention. Many do very well with this medication. We have more information here; https://migraine.com/migraine-treatment/propranolol-inderal.
On the other hand Ajovy is a new CGRP medication many do well on too. I've tried propranolol which didn't work for me, but that doesn't mean it won't for you. I don't take CGRP medications at the moment.
I'm sure others will be along shortly to share their experiences with you and I'm sending you pain free wishes, Nancy Harris Bonk, Patient Leader/Moderator Migraine.com Team

    1. Thank you Nancy. Merry Christmas!

      1. Hi - here are a couple of links to some information on Ajovy. https://migraine.com/ajovy-fremanezumab-vfrm & https://migraine.com/clinical/cgrp-similar-different I hope you got the chance to look at the site Nancy (my colleague) gave you for propranolol. Both meds can be effective but unfortunately, no 2 people are alike and there is a chance it won't help. I have been on this merry-go-round as well, jumping on and off trying this medication and that medication, but I havent found many that help. I am using Qulipta and Zolmitriptan and currently went up on the CGRP to a higher dose to see if it's effective. Fingers crossed. Having a treatment plan is essential, as treatment of migraines can be challenging. Wishing you positive results AND a wonderful holiday season. Rebecca (Community moderator)
