Anyone start getting migraines again after being migraine free?

I’ve had migraines since my teens. Now 50. About three years ago eliminated gluten and all migraines stopped except those around my period. About 18 months ago I had a hysterectomy and started hrt. Have been pretty much migraine free since then until the last 2 months.

Have had a migraine most days of the last 2 months with dizziness - new symptom for me. Anyone have any ideas what could be going on?

  1. Hi becky,

Thank you for reaching out to us. I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing a new symptom. It's not uncommon for our migraine attack triggers and/or patterns to change over time. However, when we have new and/or different symptoms, it's a good idea to let the doctor know so he/she can make sure everything checks out OK.

Lasting migraine pain, more than 72 hours, increases our risk of status migrainous and stroke. It would be helpful to have a discussion with the doctor to see how he/she can help you break this nasty two month cycle. There are a number of things they can do to help with this. For example a steroid dose pack, IV infusions, etc.

It's also possible to have more than one type of migraine attack and/or headache. Many of us with migraine disease have migraine attacks with and/or without aura, tension type headache and so on. Frustrating, absolutely!!

    I hope this helps.
Wishing you a low pain day,
    Nancy

    1. Becky,
I am also 49, had hysterectomy in October 2019. My headaches went away. I began HRT ( a compounded cream) in Dec 2019. I began having some headaches afterward. (Bad ones!) I have had success with adjusting my hormone dose. I am now on 1/4 of the dose they started me on. Increasing also gave me migraines. I am having my hormone levels tested this month. Hope I can find the right dose, or may stop altogether.

      1. and ,
Thank you for sharing your experience with your migraine journeys. It’s always good to know you are not alone. Dealing with hormones can be so tricky. I think your best source of support is your doctor who understands migraine and hormonal triggers.

    2. I am sorry for such a late response. I do hope by now your migraines have gone away. Hysterectomies are not always helpful for individuals with hormone related migraine triggers. This is because the signals that our brains send out to prepare the womb go into overload after it is removed. This can last for several years but should eventually settle down. Taking hormone replacement therapy can help. The suggested type of HRT is estrogen patches and gels. Estrogen pills can cause more fluctuations which will lead to more migraines.
