Lidocaine sphenopalatine ganglion block & Botox for migraine: can you do both?

  • By dragonflylass

    I just had my 8th Botox for migraine treatment & am scheduled for my 9th in May. My neurologist (and the entire practice) has just been certified to perform the lidocaine sphenopalatine ganglion block. Has anyone had this done? Results? Does anyone know if you can do both the Botox & the lidocaine treatments at the same time (maybe not the same day) since they treat 2 different aspects of headaches? Obviously I will discuss this more with my doctor, but I was hoping for some anecdotal advice or some helpful info from someone with more experience with the lidocaine treatment. Thanks!

    My wife, who suffers HM, has both these treatments at the same time. She will have her third Botox treatment in March. The treatments are working. She started the SRG block every week, and now she will see if two or more weeks between treatments will continue to work. She has had both done the same day. I am glad to answer any question you may have. Hope your treatment is positive.

    @dragonflylass,
    Yes you can get Botox and an SPG block. I’m not sure your doctor would do it on the same day.
    I’ve been doing Botox for 4 years and recently starting with SPG blocks. My regimen is that I do Botox and then every 2 weeks until my next Botox (3 months later) I get the SPG nerve block. This is a new regimen for me and I’ve had a horrible sinus infection, so I can’t tell quite yet if it’s working. But I’m going to keep trying.

    I actually just put up a video on YouTube of me getting the SPG block so you can see what it’s like:

    Let me know if you have other questions or if the link doesn’t work. It’s my first time posting to YouTube.

    Yes, my wife has had both on the same day.She now has the SPG block every two weeks. It has been over two weeks since her last migraine. Keeping fingers crossed that this is working.

    Thank you, everyone, for your responses! They were very helpful. I just hope I don’t have to wait until my May appointment to do this.
    Katie, thanks for the video! I don’t have concerns about doing the procedure really but that helped get a better idea of the size of the catheter and flexibility. I have extremely closed off sinus passages (polyps, inflammation, etc) that can only be corrected surgically. My neuro said it shouldn’t be an issue but it helps to see it in action.
