Diagnosis of Migraine & Headache Types

Migraine with lucid nightmare

  • By jr-migrainemom

Hi Everyone, Hoping to find some insight here. My daughter has been suffering for migraines for years but until now they have been mild with an aura (hand tremor) that allowed her to take ibuprofen before the headache got bad. In the last 4 weeks, her migraines have come with what I call a ‘recurring lucid nightmare’. She is awake enough to talk and describe what she sees but cannot stop the terror she is experiencing. She thinks someone is watching her and she feels that she is trapped in a box which is going to be thrown into the ocean. Each time this happens (2-3 x a week) she is able to remember more of the nightmare and describe it in more detail. The whole episode lasts about 30 minutes, which is the time it takes for the ibuprofen to kick in. She is not on any medication. She takes a Vitamin D, vitamin b6 and a Magnesium supplement. The nightmare only comes during the migraine, not during her sleep. Has anyone experienced this or heard of it? Thank you.

    Hi Jr-migrainemom,

Thank you for your post. So sorry to hear that your daughter experiences chronic migraine and has now began to have what sounds like very scary nightmares. There are others who experience this. The following article discusses chronic migraine and dreams/nightmares – https://migraine.com/blog/migraine-dreams-and-nightmares/. The community member comments are helpful as well. Also, have you spoken with your daughter’s daughter migraine specialist regarding her nightmares? We always suggest, here at Migraine.com, speaking with your doctor when new symptoms crop up. They will be able to provide the best information related to her symptoms. I hope you find this helpful. If you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to reach out. We love hearing from you.

    Warmly,

    Meaghan (Migraine.com Team)
