MRI triggered migraine?

I had an MRI done 5 days ago specifically because I'd been getting headaches/migraines almost daily for a couple years. I'm currently on Topamax which has almost entirely relieved my headaches, but my doctor still wanted the MRI done just in case. I don't have the results back yet so I don't know if it showed anything. But when I was getting my MRI done, I started getting a migraine. I told the nurse and she said it was probably just the sound/vibrations but those things have never triggered migraines for me before. It was like I could -feel- the MRI (which I know isn't supposed to be a thing) and my brain felt like it was throbbing in pain. Ever since then, every single day, I've had a headache/migraine, despite my meds.

I was just wondering if anyone else has had something similar after an MRI? I don't know if it's stress or what but it only started as soon as I got that MRI done and I'll admit I'm worried about it.

  1. Hi wrathful,

Thank you for your question. I hear the concern in your voice, and I don't blame you. It could be a combination of sound from the MRI and stress. I know when I've had MRI's my head always feels worse afterwards!

Having said that, if you're not feeling better tomorrow, please let the doctor know.

    1. Hi Nancy,

Thanks for your response. It's a bit reassuring to hear that I'm not the only one who's had an experience of their head feeling worse after an MRI, thank you.

My head has started to feel better the past couple days. Not "normal" per se, but at least better, so I'm hoping it was stress and it just took me some time to recover. I'll definitely be mentioning it to my doctor though.

      Thanks again!
