Botox while suffering from migraine

Any advice on how to approach an appointment for Botox injections while suffering from a migraine? I've had this happen in the past, and while normally the injections don't bother me much at all, during an attack, each injection is excruciatingly painful. I don't dare cancel the appointment, as it takes so long to get rescheduled. Looking for any suggestions on how to manage what is sure to be an awful experience?

  1. Hi - Thanks for posting your question. I think it's completely understandable that you're looking for tips on managing migraine discomfort during your Botox injections. I'm going to tag to your post, and see if she has anything to add. She has done over 20 years of Botox treatment for migraine, and may be able to share some of the tips and tricks she has learned along the way.

    1. - I'm sorry you are in this position, having an appt for Botox while suffering from a migraine. I was the same. I didn't want to go out at all that day. I felt miserable and looked even worse. But ... I "bit the bullet" and headed to my neurologist's office. I did tell him prior that I was suffering from a migraine at the time and he stated it wasn't an issue. As for it being painful, I found it to be similar to that of taking a prick involved in blood work, albeit there are more pricks involved in Botox treatment and at delicate locations. I chose to go and have it done with the hope it helped. I wonder if putting an ice pack on the treated areas would help tone down any injection pain. I hope others chime in on their experience with Botox injections while suffering the pain of a migraine. Sending healing and well-being your way. Rebecca (team member)

      1. does Botox, too!

Did you have your appointment, Rymac? Wondering how it went and how you're feeling. Hoping for the best! -Melissa, migraine team

        1. Hi
I hear how frustrating it is to get Botox while in the midst of a migraine attack - been there, done that! When I told my doctor I was in the middle of an attack before she started the injections, she asked if I would like a shot of Toradol. Yes, I sure did! It didn't help immediately, but overall was worth another injection.
I've taken acetaminophen or ibuprofen before Botox. Please always check with your doctor before you do so.
Have you had a chance to speak with the doctor about increased pain during these injections? They may have some tips and tricks they can use to help. There may be a numbing cream that could be used. Never hurts to ask!
