Citric Acid Causes Visual Auras and Migraines

(Manufactured with the use of poison fungi, manufactured citric acid - misleadingly labeled “citric acid”) is ubiquitous in foods, beverages and other products.
If I make the mistake of eating more than a very small amount of this additive I have about 24 hours before visual auras- blanks in my field of vision- then the migraine strikes 30 minutes later and then the nausea- vomiting. And four hours later a gradual decrease in pain.
Thank goodness my mom told me about this trigger. For anyone who hasn’t found out the cause of their migraines- try eliminating citric acid.

  1. Please note, I’m not talking about vitamin C/or ascorbic acid or citrus fruits.

    1. Hi
Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Yes, citric acid can trigger a nasty migraine attack for some of us. I'm glad you were able to figure this out and I hope will reduce attack frequency and severity for you.
Most with migraine have loads of different triggers including odors, lights, sound and certain foods. The thing is not everyone with migraine disease has food triggers and there is considerable talk that some food triggers may not be triggers at all, Instead these may food craving as part of the migraine process.
We're not sure the exact cause of migraine but do know it's a complex neurological disease that falls on a spectrum from mild to severely debilitating. This article from Dr. Young, a world renown migraine expert talks about cause vs trigger and is very interesting; https://migraine.com/expert/argh-trigger-is-not-cause-dont-let-them-get-away-with-it
